Habits of the High Vibrational

I am Jasmine Kahlia.

A powerhouse in the UK Interdisciplinary Arts Scene and a Live - Looping Specialist. I have expanded my discipline in the arts to around 19 mediums and have built my Arts business from the ground up - from 2007. That means I’ve almost been 20 years in the game.

 

Success is not built overnight, but nurtured. I am so grateful to be building my platform into my 30s - and doing so with intention, autonomy and insight.

I was brought up as pretty much an only child and so was faced with any childs worst nightmare in the 90s - alone time and no exciting thing like the internet to keep me entertained. My mum would play Classic FM, and when I would hear piano pieces like Pachelbel Canon or Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata, I used to feel deep elation and connection. I wanted to make people feel the same through my music.

I begged my mum at 6 years old to buy me a keyboard - and when she gave it to me as a Christmas present, I soon realised I would need to learn to sight read before playing, I asked her to get me a manual on sheet music.

 

 

I looked at these black dots on the page for weeks, begging them to make sense. I asked my mum, and she said she didnt know how to read sheet music.

I flung the stupid book in the bin and went off. Annoyed that I couldn’t figure out how to make music. The one thing I wanted to do.

I went off, cried in frustration and turned my back on the piano. I wanted to be able to write my own music, but I just couldn’t figure it out.

I went outside, played with my friends, annoyed at my new keyboard and its complexity. I gave up.

Then, once away from the keyboard. Outdoors. Suddenly for me, it clicked. Do the dots correspond to the lines on the page?

Does one above the other mean C, D, E? Do Re Mi?

I rushed back to my book, squinted my eyes and suddenly it made sense.

No teacher, no tutorial videos. Just my fixation on solving a mystery. That’s when my solution became clear.
